FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. � If you�re looking for a truly memorable evening, there are more reasons than the feel-good fun to attend the Cape Fear Regional Theatre�s production of Pump Boys & Dinettes. This annual Fayetteville tradition is held in an outdoor venue on the banks of the Cape Fear River. And this year, it has a new home.
A local developer, who owns property along the Cape Fear River, has built a riverside amphitheatre. You�ll enjoy the first-rate production of Pump Boys & Dinettes from your seat carved in the riverside bluff, against the backdrop of the rolling Cape Fear River. You�ll also be visiting a slice of local history. The 30-acre site where the new amphitheatre is located is named Campbellton Landing. Campbellton was the original Scottish settlement that merged with the Cross Creek community to become Fayetteville. During the colonial era, this site served as a ferry landing. What�s more, trenches and gun embankments used by local militia during the Civil War are still evident along the river. And General Sherman�s troops, on their way to the battle of Averasboro, crossed the river near this area on pontoon bridges. Developer Sol Rose also built the amphitheatre using historic lamps and railings recovered from Fayetteville�s Person Street Bridge, currently being reconstructed.
Now, fast forward in history to simpler times in small-town Americana. Add the high energy, impossible-not-to-tap-along music, and you�ll understand the irresistible charm of Pump Boys & Dinettes. A fitting selection for the 20th anniversary of this unique outdoor production, Pump Boys was the first River Show put on by Fayetteville�s Cape Fear Regional Theatre in 1984. (It won the N.C. Theatre Conference competition that year.)
