Governor Mike Easley announced today that a yearlong effort by the N.C. Department of Commerce and the Cumberland County Business Council (CCBC) has resulted in the location of Nitta Gelatin USA, Inc. in Cumberland County. Nitta Gelatin USA is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nitta Gelatin, Inc. of Japan, a world leader in gelatin production with over eighty-six years of production experience.
“We’re delighted Nitta Gelatin has selected Cumberland County for its new location,” stated Dr. Jeannette Council, chair of the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners. “This announcement validates our belief that Cumberland County is an exceptional place for pharmaceutical related businesses to locate.”
The initial phase of the facility, to be located in the Cumberland Industrial Center, will involve a $26 million investment to produce 3,000 tons of gelatin a year. Much of the production from the facility will be used by the pharmaceutical industry.
Twenty-one people will be employed initially with an average wage of $29,000 per year, plus benefits. Future expansion of the facility could include doubling the production capacity.
The firm plans to buy a 37-acre site along Production Drive in the Cumberland Industrial Center. In addition to selling the land to Nitta Gelatin, USA, the County will also consider incentive programs for the company.
“Cumberland County offered the access to raw materials, infrastructure and the positive business climate we were looking for,” stated Raymond Merz, President of Nitta Gelatin USA.
The availability of incentives through the William S. Lee Act, the One North Carolina Fund and North Carolina’s Southeast Partnership, in addition to incentives from Cumberland County, the Fayetteville Public Works Commission and Fayetteville Technical Community College, also played a key role in the decision.
Nitta expects to begin construction of the new facility in the spring of 2005 and commence production in the summer of 2006.
The CCBC is a community initiative that evolved from Greater Fayetteville Futures, a community wide planning process. The purpose of the CCBC is to coordinate the efforts of the Fayetteville Area Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Development Corporation of Fayetteville and the Fayetteville Area Economic Development Corporation.
