FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Dogwood Festival planners in the “City of Dogwoods” promised that this annual Fayetteville event would be “better than ever.” The impressive attendance figure, nearly 100,000 strong, says they were right! The festival’s main attraction – a downtown street fair running from Friday evening through Saturday and Sunday – delighted the huge crowds.

Highlights of this year’s festival included Friday and Saturday night street dances, the Midway with its big-time carnival atmosphere, great food, arts, crafts, an antique car show, special events and more. Two stage venues offered ongoing music and entertainment, from Beach to Blues, Rock and Swing. Even Elvis was sighted on Sunday.

For some, the 2004 Dogwood Festival held another surprise. Both visitors and area residents, who had not seen downtown Fayetteville for some time, were amazed by the revitalization that has taken place. Today, along the tree-lined, brick-sidewalked streets, Fayetteville’s downtown features museums, antiques, shops, galleries, trendy restaurants and cafes. It provides the perfect backdrop for the City’s street festivals, which now include “Fourth Friday” celebrations. Held the last Friday of every month (except December), these events feature arts, entertainment and special events. On the “Fourth Friday” after Thanksgiving, Fayetteville now holds its “Dickens Holiday,” fast becoming one of the south’s most popular special events. Downtown Fayetteville becomes a Victorian village, complete with Dickens characters, carriage rides and other holiday festivities.

If you’re planning a trip next spring, you may want to put Fayetteville’s Dogwood Festival (last weekend in April) on your list. (100,000 people say it’s world-class!) Or, drop by for a Fourth Friday celebration. For more information on Fayetteville events and attractions, visit www.fayettevilledogwoodfestival.com and www.gofayetteville.com.
