In
the past decade, Fayetteville State University's student
enrollment has risen by over 50 percent while average SAT
scores for entering students have increased. FSU now counts
4,531 undergraduate and graduate students, a full-time faculty
of close to 250, and enrollment is projected to grow to 6,000
by 2008. New degree programs have also been established,
including FSU's first doctoral program, in Educational Leadership.
The university offers 39undergraduate and 19 master's degree
programs in the arts and sciences, business and economics,
and education.
FSU boasts
a faculty-to-student ratio of 1-to-17 and the FSU faculty
puts teaching first. Students are guaranteed personal attention
from their professors and benefit from innovative programs
like Chancellor Willis B. McLeod's new Freshman Year Initiative,
which helps freshmen make the transition from high school
to university life.
The attractively-landscaped
FSU campus has also seen major improvements. Soon 100 percent
of campus buildings, including individual rooms in residence
halls, will have access to the information highway, and a
new Distance Learning Center is available to bring the world's
best educational resources to the campus. The Rudolph Jones
Student Center has just reopened after undergoing major expansion
and renovation, as has the Rosenthal Fine Arts Building.
All eight existing residence halls have been renovated and
air-conditioned, and a new hall was opened in 1997. The new
$11 million Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Building
boasts a 4,000-seat basketball arena, an indoor Olympic-sized
swimming pool, an aerobics studio, racquetball courts, new
outdoor tennis courts, weight rooms, and more. A $45.5 million
project for renovations and additions to the campus is underway
to accommodate expected enrollment growth.
With a
growing student body, a wide variety of undergraduate and
graduate degree programs, an attractive campus with state-of-the-art
facilities, and a nurturing faculty, Fayetteville State University
offers all of the advantages of a large university while
maintaining the atmosphere of a closely-knit liberal arts
campus.
