The
Headquarters Library, located between Maiden Lane and the
banks of the Cross Creek in the heart of downtown Fayetteville,
was dedicated and opened on Sunday, June 1, 1986. The 80,000
square foot facility provides a large public meeting room the
Pate Room which seats 225 as well as two conference
rooms, a quiet study room, ample public parking, and 41
computer workstations for the publics use, including
a public computer training lab.
The Headquarters
Library serves as the communitys information and referral
center, as well as answering traditional information and
reference questions in person, by phone and the Internet.
The second floor of the library houses the largest foreign
language collection of printed and audiovisual materials
in the southeastern United States representing over 100 languages.
An extensive Local and State History Room on the second floor
also has excellent resources for genealogists. Dont
forget the variety of childrens, teens and general
interest programs that take place each month.
This facility
serves as the hub for three regional and three community
branch libraries, a bookmobile, a law library and exciting
preschool childrens outreach programs called Read
To Me
and MotheRead that serves the entire community
population of over 302,000.
The Headquarters
Library hosts an excellent collection of North Carolina art
on all of its three floors, and a white Georgia marble sculpture,
Windowstone, graces its entrance. A fascinating
art collection of North Carolina artists are represented, including
Claude Howell, Bert Carpenter, Elizabeth Darrow, Jim Gallucci,
Herb Jackson, Vivien Weller, Thomas E. Link, Nina Freifeld,
Tom Grubb, Janet Parks, and many more.
