Military Spouse Jobs at Fort Bragg: Resources and NC Rules
Military spouses at Fort Bragg should start with the free Army Community Service Employment Readiness Program on the third floor of the Soldier Support Center, (910) 396-1425. It helps with resumes, federal applications and local job leads. Spouses can also get free SpouseWorks career coaching, up to $4,000 through the SpouseWorks Scholarship, and fast-track North Carolina licensing under state law.
The fastest local start for a military spouse job search at Fort Bragg is the Army Community Service Employment Readiness Program (ERP) on the third floor of the Soldier Support Center, Building 4-2843 Normandy Drive. Call (910) 396-1425 or 396-2390, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ERP counselors help with resumes, federal applications, interview practice and local job leads, and the service is free.
This guide pulls together the on-post, state and national programs that matter most to spouses moving to Fayetteville, plus the North Carolina rules on professional licenses and unemployment after a PCS.
Step 1: Book an Employment Readiness Appointment
The ERP serves spouses, soldiers, Guard and Reserve members, retirees, family members and Defense Department civilians through one-on-one appointments and workshops. Bring:
- Your resume (or a list of past jobs with dates, duties and supervisors)
- Any professional license or certification numbers
- Your spouse's PCS orders if you plan to use military spouse hiring preference
- A list of the jobs or fields you want to pursue
The ERP also keeps an employer resource file for jobs on and off post. Because Fort Bragg's Soldier Support Center is on the installation, spouses without a DoD ID need to come with their sponsor or get a visitor pass.
Step 2: Use the Free National Programs
| Program | What it does | How to start |
|---|---|---|
| SpouseWorks (formerly SECO) | Free career coaching, education planning and job search help from the Defense Department | Call Military OneSource at (800) 342-9647, 24/7 |
| SpouseWorks Scholarship (formerly MyCAA) | Up to $4,000 toward a license, certification, associate degree or continuing education needed to keep a license | Register on the SpouseWorks/MyCAA site; spouses of all ranks and pay grades can apply |
| Military Spouse Employment Partnership | Employers that have pledged to recruit, hire and retain military spouses | Search partner job postings through SpouseWorks |
| USAJOBS | Federal civilian jobs, including Fort Bragg positions | Create a profile and filter for jobs open to military spouses |
The scholarship was expanded to all ranks and pay grades, so spouses who were turned away under the old MyCAA rules should check again. It covers spouses of active-duty, National Guard and reserve members serving under qualifying Title 10 orders.
Step 3: Target Fort Bragg and Federal Jobs
Fort Bragg is the region's largest employer, and many civilian jobs on post are open to spouses. Federal agencies post these jobs on USAJOBS. Spouses relocating with a service member can claim military spouse preference on eligible positions; you will need a copy of the PCS orders that list you. Our Fort Bragg and federal civilian jobs guide explains how federal resumes differ from private-sector resumes and how to read a job announcement.
Other on-post employers to check:
- Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation (child and youth programs, recreation, lodging)
- The Exchange (AAFES) and Defense Commissary Agency stores
- Defense contractors and support services that hire on post
Child and Youth Services jobs often come with a childcare benefit, which matters for spouses with young children; ask about it when you apply.
Step 4: Bring Your Professional License to North Carolina
North Carolina's military spouse licensure law, G.S. 93B-15.1, says occupational licensing boards shall issue a license to a military spouse who holds a current license in good standing from a state with substantially equivalent requirements and who can show competency, for example through recent practice. Key points from the statute:
- 15-day decision. A board must issue the license, or explain in writing which criteria you have not met, within 15 days of receiving your application.
- Temporary practice permit. If you still need to finish a North Carolina requirement, the board must issue a temporary permit within 15 days. It lasts for the later of one year or the occupation's renewal date, or until your license is granted.
- No initial application fee. Boards cannot charge military spouses an initial application fee for the license or permit, though renewal fees and third-party background check costs still apply.
- Teachers. A local board of education can request a three-year limited license for a military spouse who holds a teaching license from another state.
- Exceptions. The section does not apply to lawyers, and the North Carolina Medical Board is excluded from it.
What that means in practice:
- Contact the North Carolina board for your profession (nursing, teaching, cosmetology, real estate, counseling and so on) before you move.
- Ask specifically about military spouse endorsement or a temporary permit.
- Keep copies of your out-of-state license, verification of good standing and your spouse's orders.
Teachers should contact Cumberland County Schools' human resources office about the limited license. Some professions, including nursing, are part of interstate compacts that may let you practice without a new license.
Step 5: Know Your Unemployment Rights After a PCS
North Carolina treats a military spouse relocation as good cause for leaving a job. Under G.S. 96-14.8, a spouse who quits to move with a service member reassigned from one military assignment to another is not disqualified from unemployment benefits for that reason. If you worked in North Carolina before your spouse's next PCS, file with the NC Division of Employment Security after you leave. If you are arriving from another state, check that state's rules for claims filed after a military move.
