Cumberland County Headquarters Library

Education & Training

The Headquarters Library on Maiden Lane is the central branch of the Cumberland County Public Library system and has served downtown Fayetteville since 1986, when it replaced the Anderson Street library that had opened in 1931. The building came out of a 1980s campaign in which a private fundraising drive was combined with federal, state, county and city money, after an earlier 1968 library referendum failed. Today it holds general collections, children's and adult programming, and the Local and State History staff who help residents with genealogy and regional research. The Ray Avenue side of the building carries a mural commissioned for America's 250th anniversary, and the branch marked its own 40th year in June 2026. Holds placed anywhere in the system can be picked up here. The main number, (910) 483-7727, also reaches the other branches.
