From Blockersville to Stedman: a short history
The community began in 1841, when John Culbreth Blocker built a stagecoach house and post office on land he had bought. The settlement was known as Blockers or Blockersville. Its future changed when the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad came through. According to the Fayetteville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, local citizens donated land and labor to secure a station.
Sources disagree on who the town is named for. The visitors bureau credits Nathan A. Stedman for his work bringing the railroad to the community. NCpedia's gazetteer and other references name Charles Manly Stedman, a Confederate major who later served in Congress. Either way, the railroad is why the town exists where it does.
The town marked its centennial with a two-day celebration in 2013 and published a history book; a copy is on display at Town Hall. The Maxwell House in Stedman was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
Who lives in Stedman?
Stedman has grown steadily over the past two decades as Fayetteville's east side has spread out.
| Census year | Population |
|---|---|
| 2000 | 664 |
| 2010 | 1,028 |
| 2020 | 1,277 |
In 2020 the census counted 501 households and 329 families in town. Outside the town limits, the surrounding unincorporated area also uses a Stedman mailing address, so the "Stedman" you see on a real estate listing may be a rural lot a few miles from Front Street.
What schools serve Stedman?
Cumberland County Schools runs the public schools. The usual path for children living in town is:
- Stedman Primary for Pre-K through first grade
- Stedman Elementary, 7370 Clinton Road (NC 24), for kindergarten through fifth grade
- Mac Williams Middle
- Cape Fear High, on Clinton Road east of Fayetteville
Attendance lines can change, and a rural address a few miles out may fall into a different zone. Before you sign a contract or lease, call the CCS Student Assignment Office at 910-678-2616 with the exact address. The Cumberland County Schools enrollment guide walks through registration documents. If you want something other than the assigned school, ask the district about its magnet and choice programs.
What housing is like in Stedman
Stedman's housing is mostly single-family homes. Near Front Street you will find older houses on established lots. Newer subdivisions and manufactured homes sit along the roads leading out of town, and rural parcels farther out often come with more land than you would get in Fayetteville.
A few things to check before buying:
- Town or county? Inside the town limits you may pay a town property tax rate on top of the Cumberland County rate. Confirm the parcel's tax district on the county tax bill. The Cumberland County property tax guide explains how rates and revaluations work.
- Water and sewer. Rural parcels outside town commonly rely on private wells and septic systems. Ask Town Hall which streets have town services and get a septic inspection on any rural property.
- Flood risk. Check low-lying lots near creeks against FEMA flood maps. The flood zone guide for Fayetteville home buyers shows how.
Sale prices in a town this size swing with just a few sales each month, so look at recent comparable sales for the specific street rather than a town-wide average. The Fayetteville homes for sale guide covers financing, VA loans and the North Carolina buying process.
Daily life: services, events and errands
Town Hall is at 5110 Front Street (mailing address PO Box 220, Stedman, NC 28391; phone 910-323-1892). The town lists local merchants, churches, daycares, public schools, a dental office, doctor offices, a volunteer fire department and a post office within its limits.
For anything bigger, such as groceries, big-box stores and hospitals, residents drive into Fayetteville. Cape Fear Valley Medical Center is on the east side of the Cape Fear River, which shortens the trip for Stedman residents compared with west Fayetteville. See the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center listing for the main campus.
Community events center on heritage. The town's annual Founders Day brings residents together each year, and the visitors bureau also features the Stedman Fireworks Festival. Check the town website for current dates.
Is Stedman a good place to live?
Stedman works well for people who:
- Want a small-town setting and are comfortable driving 15 to 25 minutes for most errands
- Work on Fayetteville's east side or downtown
- Want local elementary schools close to home
It is a harder fit if you want to walk to restaurants and shops, need quick access to the west side of Fort Bragg, or want a wide choice of apartments. Renters will find far fewer options here than in Fayetteville.
