Primary Care Doctors in Fayetteville, NC: TRICARE, VA & Medicaid

By FayettevilleNC.net Editorial Staff•••1113 words

Most Fayetteville residents get primary care through Cape Fear Valley Health's family and internal medicine offices, such as Highland Family Practice on Fort Bragg Road. UNC Health and FirstHealth have family medicine offices in Hope Mills. TRICARE Prime families are assigned a primary care manager, often at Womack Army Medical Center, veterans can enroll at the Fayetteville VA, and uninsured adults can apply to The CARE Clinic on Robeson Street.

Most primary care in Fayetteville runs through Cape Fear Valley Health, the county's hospital system, which operates family medicine and internal medicine offices across the city. UNC Health and FirstHealth of the Carolinas have family medicine offices in Hope Mills, and a handful of independent groups still see patients on their own. Which door you walk through depends heavily on your coverage: TRICARE, VA health care, NC Medicaid and private insurance each have their own rules for picking a doctor.

This page is general information to help you find care. It is not medical advice. If you have chest pain, trouble breathing or another emergency, call 911.

Primary Care Offices We Checked

Every office below was confirmed as operating in October 2026. Ask whether a provider is accepting new patients before you transfer records, because that changes week to week.

Cape Fear Valley's offices refer into Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for hospital care and imaging. Our Cape Fear Valley Health System guide explains how its clinics, hospitals and patient portal fit together, and the Fayetteville healthcare and hospitals guide covers the wider hospital picture.

Family Medicine, Internal Medicine or Pediatrics?

  • Family medicine sees all ages, so one office can handle parents and kids. This is the most common choice for military families who want a single practice.
  • Internal medicine treats adults only and tends to suit people managing several chronic conditions.
  • Pediatrics covers newborns through adolescence. Some family practices, such as Cape Fear Family Medical Care, see children too.

When you compare offices, check three things in this order: whether your plan lists the provider as in-network, whether the provider is taking new patients, and which hospital the practice uses for admissions.

TRICARE: Prime, Select and Womack

How you get primary care on TRICARE depends on your plan.

  • Active duty service members are enrolled in TRICARE Prime and get primary care through military clinics at Fort Bragg.
  • Family members on TRICARE Prime have a primary care manager (PCM) who handles routine care and refers to specialists. That PCM may be at Womack Army Medical Center or at a civilian network office if military clinic slots are full.
  • TRICARE Select members can see any TRICARE-authorized provider without a referral for primary care, but costs are lower in-network.

Fayetteville is in the TRICARE East Region, which Humana Military administers. Call 800-444-5445 to change your PCM or check whether an off-post office is in-network. If you are unsure whether a problem can wait for an appointment, the Military Health System Nurse Advice Line at 1-800-TRICARE (874-2273), option 1, can help you decide.

Newly arrived families should transfer enrollment as part of in-processing. The Fort Bragg relocation guide walks through the rest of that checklist.

Veterans: VA Primary Care

Veterans enrolled in VA health care can be assigned a primary care team at the Fayetteville VA Medical Center and its outpatient clinics. If you are not yet enrolled, apply online through VA.gov, by phone or in person with a copy of your DD-214. When VA cannot see you within its access standards, or the drive is too long, you may qualify for community care with a local civilian provider; the VA has to approve that first.

The veteran services directory lists county veteran service officers who help with enrollment and disability claims at no charge.

NC Medicaid: Choosing a Primary Care Provider

North Carolina expanded Medicaid on December 1, 2023, so many working adults who were previously uninsured now qualify. Most members are enrolled in a Standard Plan and pick a primary care provider through that plan. To compare plans or change your PCP, call the NC Medicaid Enrollment Broker at 1-833-870-5500. People with serious mental illness, substance use disorders or intellectual and developmental disabilities in Cumberland County may be placed in the Alliance Health Tailored Plan instead.

Before booking, confirm the office accepts your specific plan, not just "Medicaid."

No Insurance

  • The CARE Clinic, 239 Robeson St, (910) 485-0555, has provided free basic medical care to eligible low-income, uninsured adults since 1993. Volunteer clinicians handle checkups, lab tests, pharmacy services and specialist referrals. Call to ask about eligibility screening.
  • HealthCare.gov sells marketplace coverage. Open enrollment for 2027 plans starts November 1, 2026.
  • Ask any practice about self-pay rates up front. Many offer a set price for a new-patient visit.

Primary Care, Urgent Care or the ER?

Your primary care office is the right place for checkups, prescriptions, chronic conditions and most new symptoms that can wait a day or two. For sprains, minor cuts and fevers after hours, see the Fayetteville urgent care guide. For children, the pediatric urgent care guide lists kid-friendly options. Emergencies go to the emergency room or 911.

Getting Ready for a First Visit

  1. Request records from your previous doctor two to three weeks before the appointment.
  2. Bring photo ID, your insurance or TRICARE card, and a list of current medications with doses.
  3. Write down family history and any specialist you already see.
  4. Sign up for the practice's patient portal so you can see results and message the office.
  5. Ask how the office handles same-day sick visits and after-hours calls.
